Stairlift Running Costs

Look beyond the purchase price.

Understand the different stairlift running costs: electricity, maintenance, batteries and support. Compare ownership with a realistic cost checklist.

What does it cost to run a stairlift?

Running costs have four parts: electricity, scheduled servicing, battery replacement when needed, and repairs outside cover. The electricity bill alone does not describe the cost of ownership.

A stairlift’s motor rating is not its continuous electricity demand: it moves for limited periods and its charger has a different power profile. A published wattage should not be multiplied by 24 hours as though the motor runs all day.

Use the actual charger consumption or measured energy over a representative period, together with the unit rate on your own electricity bill. The example below shows the calculation; it is not a HomeGlide or Flow X performance claim.

Electricity example: turn kWh into euro

Illustration only. Suppose a suitable energy measurement records 4 kWh over 30 days, including normal travel and charging. At an assumed electricity unit rate of €0.30 per kWh, the cost is:

4 × €0.30 = €1.20 for that 30-day period.

Annualising that example gives approximately €14.60 (€1.20 × 365 ÷ 30). If measured use is 8 kWh instead, the same rate gives €2.40 for 30 days. Neither figure is a measured result from a customer installation or a current tariff quotation.

Use your own consumption and tariff, including applicable unit charges. Do not disconnect the charger or change its setup to perform a test; ask the supplier about an appropriate measurement method.

Budget beyond electricity

Record the routine service charge, what a service agreement includes, and how batteries and call-outs are treated. The battery replacement interval is not the same for every lift: age, condition, charging and use matter.

For a fair new-versus-reconditioned comparison, use the same ownership period and identify any difference in cover. For rental, confirm which of these costs is already included in the recurring payment before adding it again.

Our warranty and servicing comparison explains the different cover. Use the rent-or-buy example when you want to compare complete totals.

Keep the lift ready as instructed

Follow the manufacturer’s charging and parking instructions. Do not switch off or modify a charging arrangement simply to pursue a small estimated saving. If you are unsure how the lift should be left when unused, ask the support team or consult the user manual.
