Warranty and service contract: what is the difference?

A warranty sets out cover for specified faults or defects for a stated period, subject to its terms.

A service contract is an agreement for maintenance and sometimes additional support. It may include planned visits, call-outs or certain parts, but the name alone does not tell you the scope.

A call-out is a visit to investigate a reported issue; it may be chargeable even if a routine service is already booked.

These can coexist. Read the documents together to avoid paying twice for the same benefit or assuming that an uncovered item is included. Begin with the exact lift and installation date, because those identify the applicable cover.

Compare cover line by line

Create a row for each item and mark included / excluded / excess payable / unclear:

• Mechanical and electrical parts
• Labour and travel
• Call-out and diagnostic charges
• Batteries and other consumables
• Routine annual servicing
• Accidental damage or misuse
• Out-of-hours visits
• Remote controls and accessories

Also record the term, renewal price, cancellation terms and any service-history requirement. A response target is different from a guaranteed repair completion time, particularly if a part must be ordered.

Use the quotation checklist before buying and retain the final signed terms.

Understand maintenance and response

Check any servicing requirements and how appointments are booked. Ask whether out-of-hours support means telephone assistance, an engineer visit or something else. A support number is not itself a guaranteed response time.

If the lift was installed by a different company, confirm model support and eligibility for a new agreement before relying on it.

Questions to settle with O’Connor Carroll

For a proposed lift, ask which warranty applies to that model and whether the price includes routine maintenance. For an existing lift, provide the model, age and agreement so the team can check the cover before arranging work.

The company’s published second-hand page states a one-year warranty for reconditioned lifts; the exact current cover belongs in the quotation. Do not assume that a new and a used lift have identical terms.

For planned visits, use servicing. For an active fault, use repair support. This distinction helps the team arrange the right response.
