Rent or buy: what makes the decision change?

Rental can be useful when the duration is uncertain or you want to avoid owning the equipment. Buying can become more attractive over a longer period, provided the installed lift suits you and the ongoing costs are understood. Neither choice is automatically cheaper.

Start with two time horizons: the period you currently expect and a longer scenario if your plans change. Compare the same staircase solution in both. A rental straight lift is not an equivalent alternative to a purchased curved lift if your home needs a turning rail.

O’Connor Carroll offers rental enquiries; the model, availability and actual terms need confirming before the figures below can become your comparison.

A worked example: the point where totals meet

Illustration only—not O’Connor Carroll prices. Suppose rental has €800 non-refundable setup, €100 per month and €200 removal. Suppose an equivalent purchase costs €3,000 installed, plus €200 servicing in the first year.

At 6 months, rental totals €1,600 (€800 + €600 + €200). At 12 months it totals €2,200. At 24 months it totals €3,400. If purchase plus two years of assumed servicing totals €3,400, the simplified totals meet at 24 months.

Real quotes may include different servicing, VAT, deposits and repairs, so replace every assumed figure before deciding. Refundable deposits affect initial cash required. Do not count them as a final cost unless retained, or subtract an unconfirmed resale value from ownership.

The contract details that can outweigh the monthly fee

Record the minimum term, early-return charge, notice period and removal cost. Identify who pays for routine maintenance, battery replacement, accidental damage and a breakdown visit. Ask what happens if needs change and the supplied lift is no longer suitable.

For purchase, record warranty exclusions and the cost of any service agreement. An inexpensive monthly rental can be costly if the minimum commitment is long; a low purchase price may omit installation or preparation.

Use the quote comparison checklist for consistent inclusions. Keep Irish VAT repayment rules separate: rental costs do not qualify under the aids-and-appliances repayment scheme.

Make the decision after the survey

Bring the comparison to your discussion with O’Connor Carroll. Ask for the terms of the actual available options and use the same timeframe on both sides. The goal is a clear commitment you understand, alongside a lift that fits the user and the house.
