Stairlift grants: the current headline figures
Ireland’s Mobility Aids Grant can provide up to €8,000 towards approved work, including a stairlift. The published household-income ceiling is €37,500, subject to the scheme’s income calculation and permitted deductions. The award is assessed by your local authority; it is not an automatic discount from the installer.
For a larger package of disability adaptations, ask the council which scheme is appropriate rather than assuming the Mobility Aids Grant is the only route. Do not confuse it with Housing Aid for Older People, which addresses a different category of home improvements.

Survey, occupational therapy and grant approval
A stairlift supplier’s survey establishes the technical fit. An occupational therapist’s assessment considers the person’s access needs. They perform different jobs. Dublin City Council’s current guidance requires an OT assessment for a stairlift and explains the contribution available towards a qualifying private assessment.
Obtain the council’s checklist first, arrange the necessary assessment and gather an itemised quotation. Wait for written approval before starting grant-funded work. Check any completion deadline in the award letter before agreeing an installation date.
A quoted price, an application acknowledgement and a grant approval are three different documents. Keep each one. Our Dublin application walkthrough explains the sequence and links to council routes.
Dublin has four council routes
Dublin City, Fingal, South Dublin and Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown each administer local applications. The correct route depends on the property address, not the location of the stairlift showroom.
If you are unsure which authority applies, check the address with the council before collecting paperwork. Our application guide breaks the preparation into practical steps without asking you to send financial or medical documents through a sales form.
What will you need to pay yourself?
The maximum grant is a ceiling, not a guaranteed payment. The approved eligible cost and your assessment determine the award. Any amount above the approved contribution remains your responsibility.
Dublin City Council states that its grant does not cover VAT. A separate Revenue repayment may be available for qualifying goods, but services and rental costs are excluded under that scheme. Never subtract an assumed refund twice or treat all invoice lines as eligible.
Before ordering, reconcile three figures: the supplier’s full invoice, the council’s written contribution and the amount you can fund yourself. Read the VAT repayment guide and price guide alongside your award letter.
