A HOME IN RATHGAR · A FLOW X INSTALLATION

Mary’s staircase. Her home again.

For Mary O’Reilly, the daily climb had become a worry. O’Connor Carroll supplied and fitted a Flow X curved stairlift to help her keep using the home she loves.

“The fear of having to climb the stairs every day was becoming bigger than the fear of having to leave my home. That’s all gone now, and you really can’t put a price on peace of mind.”

Mary O’Reilly · Rathgar

These photographs show the rail following Mary’s staircase and landing. They illustrate her installation; your route and seating arrangement would be planned after a survey.

A curved stairlift for the home you know

A bend in the staircase should start a conversation about the right rail route. Flow X is an Access BDD model supplied by O’Connor Carroll for indoor stairs, including turning flights and suitable narrow layouts. Each proposed installation needs to account for the shape of the staircase and the person travelling on it.

Your home survey considers where you sit down, how the chair negotiates the turns and where you stand up at the end. We also look at doorways, landing space and the route other people use. Explore our curved stairlift guide for the wider choices before deciding on a model.

How Flow X moves around a turn

Flow X uses Advanced Swivel and Levelling—ASL—to turn the seat during travel while keeping it level. This changes the seated orientation as the chair follows the rail. It is a defining difference from a chair that faces the same direction throughout its journey.

For you, the value is a route that can make better use of available space. For us, it is still a design that needs checking in your home. Your knee position, the turns and the places where you transfer all matter. The manufacturer’s minimum-width figure does not mean every staircase of that width is suitable.

Comfort that deserves a proper demonstration

The padded seat, backrest and adjustable seating arrangement are intended to support a comfortable seated journey. Flow X has folding arms and a footrest, together with a joystick control and seat belt. Available upholstery and rail finishes let you consider appearance alongside function; ask us to confirm the current choices for your quote.

A demonstration should answer practical questions. Can you reach and hold the joystick? Is the seat height comfortable when sitting down and standing up? Can you fasten the belt? Tell us about any movement you find difficult so that we can discuss the options and, where necessary, the value of an occupational therapy assessment.

Where the rail starts matters as much as the curve

A chair parked near a doorway can affect how a hallway is used. Flow X offers different rail start, finish and parking arrangements, including parking curves in suitable layouts. Those options are part of planning the route; they should not be treated as interchangeable extras.

At the survey, show us how you use the hall and landing every day. We can discuss the chair’s parking position, the space available for transfers and what remains clear for the rest of the household. For a single unbroken straight flight, compare HomeGlide as well; a curved model is not automatically the right answer for every home.

What affects the cost of a Flow X?

The rail route is a major part of a curved stairlift quotation. Flight length, bends, landings, parking arrangements and selected options can change the specification. Your proposal should explain the complete installed package rather than leave you comparing an isolated chair price.

We will discuss the next steps after your survey. Confirm the agreed model, rail design, installation work, warranty and aftercare before proceeding. Supply or manufacturing time and the fitting appointment are separate parts of the timetable. See our price guide and grant information for questions to bring to your appointment; grant eligibility is assessed separately by the relevant authority.

Your route from enquiry to everyday confidence

A conversation first. You can contact us without knowing which lift you need. Tell us about the staircase, the person using it and what you would like to make easier.

A measured proposal. The home survey establishes the route and assesses practical fit. Discuss a showroom visit if you would like to try a demonstration lift before deciding.

A clear installation plan. Once you approve the specification, agree the current supply timetable and installation arrangements. Keep the access route clear on the agreed day.

Support after fitting. Have the controls and parking instructions explained, practise the journey and keep the aftercare details to hand. Ask about servicing and who to contact if you need help.

STRAIGHT ANSWERS

Your Flow X questions, answered.

Is Flow X the lift in Mary’s Rathgar project?

Yes. Mary’s staircase shown on our homepage and in this case study was supplied and fitted with a Flow X by O’Connor Carroll. Her photographs show one particular rail route; yours would be assessed individually.

Will Flow X fit a very narrow staircase?

Access BDD describes suitable installations from 610 mm staircase width. Fit depends on the complete geometry and the person’s seated dimensions, so a home survey must confirm the clearance rather than relying on width alone.

What is ASL technology?

Advanced Swivel and Levelling turns the seat as the lift moves and keeps it level. This helps Flow X negotiate its planned route around bends and through suitable narrow areas.

Can the chair fold away?

Yes, Flow X has folding components to reduce the space it occupies when not in use. The remaining passage space and the best parking position need checking on your own stairs.

Is Flow X only for curved stairs?

It can be configured for straight as well as curved indoor routes. On a simple straight flight, HomeGlide may also be worth considering. The survey compares suitability rather than recommending a model from the shape alone.

Will it work if the electricity goes off?

Flow X is battery powered. Travel during an outage depends on the batteries’ condition and charge. Follow the supplied instructions for charging and parking, and ask the team to explain what to do during an outage.

Can you give me a price before seeing the stairs?

We can discuss the factors involved, but a reliable installed quote needs the rail route and specification confirmed. Ask us for a free survey and a written proposal for your home.
