Confirm the stages and the appointment
Ask the supplier to distinguish survey time, equipment or rail preparation and the fitting visit. Curved rails and available straight equipment can have different supply processes. A claim about fitting duration does not tell you the total waiting period.
Explain any important deadline early and obtain the expected schedule for your order. Keep the contact details for appointment changes.
Before the appointment: a practical checklist
□ Confirm the installation date and access arrangements.
□ Check that any agreed electrical or building preparation is complete.
□ Tell the team if the stairs or flooring changed after measurement.
□ Clear loose items from the steps, hall and landing without moving heavy furniture yourself.
□ Plan how household members, pets and visitors will stay clear of the work area.
□ Arrange for the user and a helpful relative or carer to attend the demonstration where possible.
If the staircase is needed to reach essential rooms, discuss access during the work before the day. Do not assume it will remain available at every stage of fitting.
During fitting: make space for the handover
Keep the agreed work area clear and let the installers manage equipment and testing. Avoid using the staircase through the work zone until they confirm it is appropriate.
Allow time at the end for a demonstration at a pace that suits the user. Practise fastening the belt, operating the control, swivelling at the landing and parking correctly. Ask to repeat any movement that is unclear rather than trying to remember a rushed explanation.
If an optional folding rail is fitted, have its operation and the required clear space explained. The doorway and hinged-rail guide helps identify questions to bring to handover.
After installation: keep the essentials together
□ Operating manual and model details.
□ Accepted specification and paid invoice.
□ Warranty terms and any service agreement.
□ Normal charging and parking instructions.
□ Repair contact details and the service due date.
Report a problem or unexpected behaviour rather than treating it as something you must get used to. Follow the user instructions for cleaning and charging; do not use DIY maintenance advice intended for another model.
Plan routine servicing and bookmark the repair contact page. If the work is grant funded, retain the completion and payment evidence required by your council.
