Why a doorway can change the rail design

A stairlift rail normally needs space beyond the first step so that the chair reaches a usable boarding position. If that extension crosses a doorway or the regular walking route through the hall, it can create an obstruction.

Show the surveyor the full door swing and how people move past the stairs. A drawing with the door closed can conceal the problem. Furniture, radiators and mobility aids can also reduce the space available.

The solution depends on the model and layout. It may involve a suitable folding rail, a different start or parking arrangement, or another design. Do not shorten or alter an installed rail yourself to clear a door.

How a HomeGlide folding rail helps

Access BDD offers an optional powered folding rail for HomeGlide. The lower section can fold away after use, helping keep a nearby route clear where the surveyed layout permits it. Its movement and safe clearances must be considered alongside the chair’s position.

This is an option for a specified installation, not a feature included in every straight lift. Ask for it to be named in the quotation and demonstrated at handover. Check that the user can operate the agreed arrangement and that other household members understand it.

See the HomeGlide guide and manufacturer’s folding-rail information. Curved rail parking arrangements need their own assessment.

Consider people walking past

Review the footprint when the seat is occupied, parked and folded. Consider everybody who regularly uses the stairs, including anyone carrying everyday items. The survey should explain the remaining practical access and any limitations.

A photograph or a universal clearance figure cannot establish the arrangement for every household.

Test the hallway routine before approving the plan

Discuss these situations at the survey: someone entering with shopping; another person passing the parked lift; a walking frame beside the seat; and the door opening fully. Confirm where the chair charges and whether clearing the hallway changes the normal parking routine.

A folding rail is not permission to leave objects in its movement area. Follow the supplied instructions and keep people and pets clear while it operates. If it stops or behaves unexpectedly, contact support instead of forcing it.

For other restricted layouts, read stairlifts for narrow stairs. For the whole route assessment, arrange a free home survey.
