The usual starting point is an annual service

O’Connor Carroll recommends servicing stairlifts annually. Your model’s maintenance instructions and agreement take priority if they specify a different or more frequent schedule. Heavy use, environmental conditions or a reported problem may justify an earlier visit.

Annual servicing is a planned check, not a reason to keep using a lift that has developed a fault. Report unusual noise, unreliable charging, repeated stops or changes in movement when they happen.

A simple maintenance calendar

At handover, record the installation date, model and first recommended service date. After each visit, record the engineer’s findings, work done and next due date. Keep battery replacements and any repair visits in the same record.

Between appointments, follow the user instructions for parking, charging and cleaning. Keep loose items off the stairs and avoid blocking the rail. A regular visual check from a safe position can identify a new obstruction, but it does not replace professional inspection.

If the lift has been unused for a prolonged period or there are concerns about battery condition, contact the supplier before assuming it is ready for normal use.

Check whether maintenance is included

A warranty generally concerns specified defects; it does not automatically pay for routine servicing. A service agreement may include scheduled visits, call-outs or parts, but the scope varies. Keep the actual agreement rather than relying on a phrase such as “full cover”.

Before booking, identify the service charge, excluded consumables and how additional work will be authorised. Ask whether the appointment fulfils any maintenance condition in your warranty.

Our warranty versus service-contract guide separates the documents. For a lift already showing a warning, use repairs so the visit is booked for the right purpose.

Avoid DIY maintenance assumptions

Carry out only the cleaning or user tasks described by the manufacturer. Do not lubricate a rail, adjust equipment or open a cover unless your model’s instructions expressly provide a safe user task. If uncertain, ask the support team.
