Quick answers when you are choosing a stairlift

Do I need a straight or curved lift?
A single unbroken flight normally starts with a straight-rail assessment. Bends and landings require the complete route to be considered. Compare the two.

What does a stairlift cost?
The model, rail, options and fitting affect the total. Our price guide provides dated published starting figures and explains their limitations.

Can I rent one?
Yes, O’Connor Carroll offers rental enquiries. Layout, available equipment and terms need confirming. Explore rental.

Can I try a lift?
The Ballymount showroom offers straight and curved demonstrations; call to confirm the model you want to try.

Funding, fitting and ownership questions

Is grant help available?
The Mobility Aids Grant can support approved stairlift work. The council assesses eligibility; read the current grant guide before ordering.

How often is servicing recommended?
O’Connor Carroll recommends an annual service, subject to the model instructions and agreement. See the maintenance guide.

Will the lift run during a power cut?
Battery-powered models can operate while sufficient charge remains. Capacity depends on condition and use. Read the power-cut guide.

My lift has stopped—what should I do?
Use the repair phone route, not a new-sales form. Give the model, location and warning details; do not bypass safety devices.

STRAIGHT ANSWERS

Your questions, answered.

Will a stairlift damage the wall?

A stairlift rail is normally supported from the staircase rather than fixed along the wall. Fixings and any preparatory work depend on the specified installation; ask the surveyor to show you the proposed fixing points.

Can someone else still walk up the stairs?

The seat, arms and footrest can fold on many models, but the rail remains. Your survey must check remaining passage space with the lift folded, parked and in use; do not assume a published minimum width guarantees comfortable access.

Does a stairlift need mains power all the time?

Battery-powered lifts need a suitable electrical supply for charging. Follow the model’s parking and charging instructions and leave its normal supply on unless the manufacturer or engineer directs otherwise. Stored battery power is limited.

How often is servicing needed?

O’Connor Carroll publishes annual servicing guidance. Follow the interval in the instructions and your own agreement, and report unusual noises, unreliable stopping or charging faults between services.

Can I buy a stairlift without a home survey?

A reliable installed quotation needs the route, user fit, landings, power supply and options checked. Photographs can prepare the discussion but do not establish every clearance or replace the installation assessment.

Can I organise this for a parent?

Yes. Make the initial enquiry with their knowledge and involve them in the demonstration and survey wherever possible. Their comfort, reach and preferred way of getting on and off are central to choosing the lift.
